08 A Strategic Competitive Competency
Spiraling Competitiveness
It has long been observed that companies have to continually increase their ability to compete in order to simply survive. And it is now widely recognized that this leads to a need to accelerate increases in competitiveness.
Innovation, in the broad sense from basis research to sales tactics, is a primary source of competitiveness. So to accelerate competitiveness, companies must accelerate innovation.
Collaborative process development pervades all phases of innovation, right up to the inventor’s creative inspirations. So innovation is constrained by collaborative solutions development capability.
That makes collaborative process development capability a strategic competitive competency. Specifically what this means is:
1) Companies with the greatest collaborative solutions development capabilities will occupy the leading edge of innovation in their sectors.
2) Companies that maintain the lead in collaborative solutions development capability will occupy the high ground of competitive advantage in their sectors for long periods of time.
3) If an organization does not have a strategy for increasing collaborative solutions development capability, they will eventually:
- Have difficulty in executing strategic initiatives;
- Have difficulty in formulating effective strategy;
- Fall behind companies that do.
This is where the trends described above all come to a boiling point, particularly around “the war for talent”. Until there is a highly effective, widely usable tool set for collaborative solutions development, individuals with strong capability will be the next best thing.
